Start a Mom Blog in 2020
Are you a mom that has always wanted to share her thoughts with other moms? Have you had some experiences that you think other parents might benefit from learning about? Or do you simply want to talk about all the funny and cute things your child does?
In any case, starting a mom blog might be just the right thing for you. It is simple, it can be very fun, and who knows… you might even earn some money with it. It might seem overwhelming to start a real blog, but it is actually quite easy.
Here are some tips and ideas!
What is your niche?
One of the first things you should decide is what exactly do you want the blog to be about. Do you want it to be a blog with a general ‘mom’ theme, where you post anything that comes to your mind regarding parenting? Nothing wrong with that, but with that choice comes to the danger of not all of your readers being interested in reading everything you post.
Maybe the better idea is to find a blog niche that suits you. If there is only one main topic on your blog and everything revolves around it, there are bigger chances that the people visiting it will stay longer and read more articles related to a topic that interests them.
Here are some niche ideas for mommy bloggers:
- Parenting advice
- Fashion and Beauty
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Lifestyle
- Health and Wellness
- Home Decor
- Frugal Living
And many many more to choose from. Just choose a niche that’s passionate and fuels your creativity.
Choosing a blog name?
After you decide on the niche for your blog, you should think about what it will be called and what your domain name will be. When choosing a domain, you should be aware that there are two types that you can go for – top-level (usually paid) and sub-domain (usually free). Having a top-level domain means that your URL will be completely your own, for example, yourblogname.com. Having a sub-domain means that there will be a name of another domain in your URL, such as yourblogname.wordpress.com.
Having a free domain is not a bad choice if you are only looking to have some fun with your blog, but if you want to earn some money with it (free domains do not usually allow commercial stuff), or you simply want to be fully in control of your blog (many free domains add their own ads to the blogs that blog owners have no control of), paying for the domain might be the right choice.
When you’re ready to choose a domain name, you can go to Godaddy, Namecheap, and Namesilo to register your new blog name.
Choosing your hosting provider?
Choosing your host provider is another important thing to think about when starting a blog. A blog host is a company that provides the space on their servers to host your blog. There are some free blog hosting providers and some paid ones, and, just as before, your choice should depend on what your plans with your blog are. Free hosting usually means that the services that come with it are limited, and there are multiple things you should look for when choosing the provider – 24/7 support, having the domain name the way you want it, security, amount of storage provided, email account, etc.
Here are some paid hosting providers:
Choosing your blog platform?
With all these choices comes the choice of your blogging platform too. It will most likely be a choice you make together with your choices for the domain and hosting, and those three things will make the base of your blog that you will build everything else upon, so you should think carefully when choosing it. Definitely, the most popular option (it powers more than 30% of all websites on the internet) is WordPress. It has gained popularity for reason, as it is not difficult to use and it has many useful features – themes, plugins, additional features (online store, forum), etc.

Additional Blog Tools
Another thing you should think about is the additional tools that you might want to use on your blog. For example, Grammarly is a browser extension that takes care of your grammar and spelling for you, and Canva is a tool that helps you create custom images you can use on your blog.
Another important thing for a successful blog is having the right keywords in your titles and posts, so people find it easily. That is when SEO (search engine optimization) comes to work, with plugins such as Rank Math. Another option is using a program that helps you search keywords and see how popular they are, such as Ahrefs.
Do keyword research and learn about SEO
The fact of the matter is, in order for your blog to be noticed, you need to create some catchy posts, and you will need to learn about on-page SEO as well as doing keyword research. You can use KWFinder to do free keyword research. You will not want to aim for overly competitive keywords. The best ones are long-tail keywords which are phrases that are not too competitive but are searched often on Google. And you will need to do this for every post you plan to write.
Be consistent with updating new content
You cannot be successful if you only write a post once a month. You need to start off by updating your blog at least once a week, and ideally, you should be writing 2 or 3 times a week and keep it consistent as much as you can. And, you will want to be consistently sharing your content on social media after updating your blog each time. The purpose is to increase your chance of going viral on any other topic.
Offer freelance services through your blog
This is where you can start making money. If your blog is successful and you are getting a lot of traffic and new followers, then you can always offer freelance services such as writing, social media management, or proofreading and editing. Those are examples. You can also join revenue sharing programs like Google Adsense, but you will not be making much from those!
Offer guest posts on different platforms
You want to also create some backlinks to your own blog, and the best way to do it is by offering guest posts on platforms that have consistently high levels of traffic. Some sites that accept guest posts are those like Mom Resource. You will need additional exposure through this method to help increase traffic for your site.
Invest in malware protection software
Unfortunately, hackers can ruin your site by placing bugs and worms into it, and you will need to invest in a program that can keep your site protected. You will also need an SSL certificate so that your site is considered to be trustworthy through Google.
Comment on other blogs
If you leave well and thought out comments on different blogs, and you are able to link your site onto the comment area, then that is another way to help bring extra traffic to your site.
Wrapping Up
The sky is the limit with what you can do with your mom blog! You can make money because the potential is there but you have to take action and once again stay consistent. It will be hard work but you can do it and it doesn’t have to take years for it to happen either!
Most importantly mamas, believe in yourself! You can create a masterpiece of a mom blog and you can create a full-time income by utilizing these steps! Good Luck!
